Dream Working in Pyjamas?

Dream Working in Pyjamas?

Homeworking can sound like a dream working arrangement: it gives employees the enviable ability to forego the necessity of a suit (in favour of pyjamas), work from the comfort of their home and – luxury of luxuries! – ditch the arduous rush-hour commute.  However, new research by the London School of Economics has found that too much homeworking can lead to decreased productivity and dissatisfaction among the workforce. The study found that prolonged homeworking can be damaging for staff morale, and therefore for the company as a whole.

The research was conducted among 500 staff and managers and is among the first studies into the impact of homeworking over a long period. There has been a sharp increase in the number of homeworkers in recent years: one in seven of the workforce or 4.2 million of us are now working from home regularly, compared with 2.9 million in 1998*.

The LSE funded study has revealed that staff that work from home every day often feel ‘socially and professionally isolated’, ‘out of touch’ with their colleagues, and can even lose confidence in their skills. Additionally, without the opportunity to discuss matters in person, e-mails can be misinterpreted, leading to misunderstandings and – ultimately – extra work.

Flexible serviced office space can be a great solution to the problems associated with homeworking, providing a space for teams to work together without the overheads connected with traditional office leases.  Large corporates often turn to serviced spaces to accommodate satellite teams, enabling them to keep control of their property portfolios and provide easily accessible workplaces for staff.

Arena Business Centres expanding portfolio of locations including Ferndown, Poole, Fareham, Southampton, Farnborough and Basingstoke  deliver choice for clients. In an ever changing market place, ultimately, choice and flexibility remain unwaveringly at the top of the list for every entrepreneur, SME and large corporate.

Rising to Bake Off Challenge With Arena

As The Great British Bake Off continues to bring a weekly dose of treats to our television screens, the Arena Business Centre Team in Ferndown decided to hold their own Bake Off and encourage clients to produce some inspiring baked creations. It was mixing bowls at dawn as clients from across the centre submitted their best bakes in a bid to be crowned Star Baker and win the coveted first prize of lunch for two at Chewton Glen.

After much deliberation and taste testing a team of judges decided that the winner would be Sally Wooding from Three6Zero for her delectable Banoffee Cake. Sally was congratulated and awarded the well-deserved gift from Chewton Glen.

In close second was an extremely delicious Chocolate Chilli Cake that would have impressed even the professional tastes of Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

The event was well attended by clients from across the centre’s serviced offices and studios located on Nimrod Way in Ferndown,  demonstrating the unique qualities of this vibrant business community.

Office Olympics at Arena Business Centres Fareham

With the Rio Olympics in full swing, the Arena Team at Lancaster Court decided to bring the spirit of The Games to Fareham last week and host their very own Office Olympics event! Whilst the venue was not quite Copacabana Beach, a great afternoon was had by all at the first official Arena Olympic Games…

Participating companies first tested their general knowledge with a ‘pub quiz’, before taking part in a variety of sporting events in a bid for Office Olympic gold. A number of spectators also joined the event, with some enjoying the event from their open office windows.

There was a programme of four events to decide the winners:

- The first event of the afternoon was an Olympic Treasure Hunt. Coloured tokens were hidden around the centre and members of each team were tasked with searching for tokens in turn, with the fastest to find all of their tokens being crowned the winner of the event.

- The second event involved team members trying their hand (or foot!) at penalty kicks – however, to make the challenge a little more difficult each penalty taker was required to spin several times on an office chair!

- The next challenge tested our athletes’ construction skills as well as their throwing skills: each team had two chances to make and throw paper aeroplanes. The plane that flew the furthest was our winner.

- Their final challenge was a relay event, with each aspiring Usain Bolt taking turns to complete laps of the grounds.

It was a closely fought contest, but our overall champions and gold medallists were Team LAPs/SkylogistiX, with Team Azzurri a close second and Team Digitoolbox hot on their heels in the bronze medal position. After their Olympic efforts, the athletes and spectators enjoyed refreshments, including fresh strawberries and cream.

Lancaster Court is home to a thriving business community and provides a dynamic office environment for modern businesses. With a selection of serviced offices available to let, the centre on Barnes Wallis Road in Fareham offers the perfect base for SMEs, entrepreneurs and corporate head offices alike.

Abbey House Officially Opened

Tuesday saw the official opening of Arena Business Centres’ latest development in Farnborough with Councillor Jacqui Vosper, Mayor of Farnborough, officiating the unveiling of Abbey House.

After a £3 million investment the centre on Farnborough Road has been given a new lease of life and has been transformed from a dilapidated and neglected office block to a modern, architect-designed development within the heart of Farnborough. The centre is now already home to a number of innovative entrepreneurs, expanding SME’s and large corporates who have reserved off-plan to secure an office in this 50,000 sq ft landmark building.

Commenting on Abbey House, Councillor Jacqui Vosper, says: “For months now I’ve been driving past this building; I’ve been born and bred in Farnborough and it’s so nice to actually see this building brought back to life. We have so many buildings that are just falling apart and we knock them down and rebuild them instead of reusing what we already have. It’s wonderful that Arena Business Centre have chosen Farnborough as the next location for their business centres.  Farnborough is becoming quite a hub for businesses both new and existing – it really is a brilliant business community and I hope they will join Arena Business Centre and make it their home.” Ms Vosper concludes.

The Arena team now look forward to further building the emerging business community at the centre and creating a truly vibrant office environment for the companies moving in. They are now working to secure clients for a full range of serviced offices within Abbey House including 2, 4 and 6 person offices increasing in size all the way up to large open plan offices of 10, 000 sq ft.
